Me and Perez

by Mark Anthony Febbo

/

about

Rough, early draft of a working song. Recorded on iPhone in my music room on April 4 with a 1953 Gibson ES-125 through a 1961 Danelectro Explorer Model 291. Stay tuned to BandCamp for glimpses at material in progress that will be formally released in the future.

lyrics

Oh the rain came down
Came down again down south
That rain came down
And down again down south
Perez said the bridges are out
He heard it by word of mouth

We filled a can with rain
Dripping off a big ol’ leaf
We filled a can with rain
Dripping from a jungle leaf
Made the last pack of coffee
And we shared the last tin of beef

Oh we set those flare lines
Perez tripped on one of his own
Oh we set those lines
And Perez tripped on one of his own
Yeah, he hit that soggy mud
He thought a Bouncing Betty had blown

Well it could be worse
That ain’t somethin’ I wanna see
Yeah it could be worse
Like the Hilton in the DRV
And Perez makes the looey laugh
Ain’t always funny to a grunt like me

Trapped in the boondocks
We know them birds can’t fly
Stuck out in the boonies
And we know those birds can’t fly
Hawks got no wings in the rain
Ain’t no doves ‘round hear to cry

When the rain don’t stop
And the fear won’t hide no more
Yeah the sun’s gone to hide
‘Cause there’s nothin’ worth shining for
Just Me and Perez in the rain
Just a waitin’ for what’s in store

Before the bullets rained down
Rained down again down south
Before the bullets came down
The LP went down down south
Ain’t no rest for the willing
Ain’t no rest for the rest down south

I helped Perez to the choppers
When they finally found their way
All covered and cozy
He would no longer have to stay
And the wind took his blanket
So I would never forget his face
